This year’s Migrant Student Leadership Institute continued with the dual mission of preparing students for leadership roles at local, state, and national levels and assisting them to pursue a higher education at the University of California and other major colleges.  The Institute continued to be guided by the premise that access to information and rigorous intellectual preparation are fundamental to the development of effective leaders for the migrant farm worker community.

Session I, held June 23rd - July 20th,  hosted 44 migrant students entering their senior year of high school for a four-week residential program.  The students were selected for participation by the various Migrant Regions throughout the state of California.  They were housed at UCLA’s Dykstra Hall and offered intense academic preparation, a series of workshops, and various activities aimed at preparing them for both college admission and leadership through service.

Session II, held July 28th – August 3rd,  was a one-week residential program hosting 137 students entering their junior year of high school.  Students, who were also selected from the various migrant regions throughout the state, were offered workshops, speakers, and the opportunity to actively participate in daily sessions of Theatre of the Oppressed.  Students who successfully completed Session II became eligible to participate in Session I of 2003.
